the latest gear

2018: BIG upgrades, most notably Focal Twin6 Be and Focal SUB6 monitors. A much needed upgrade as I haven't been happy with my previous monitors for a while.

Also, a stereo pair of Empirical Labs EL8X-S Distressors w/British Mod (replicates the classic 1176 "all buttons in" mode). A legendary compressor, workhorse in modern recording.

2017: Finally got serious about analog mic pre's and compressors. In addition to the analog gear described below, I picked up a Shure SM7B mic for vocals which has been on the wish-list for a while.

I chose 500-series format for new analog gear to maximize space in my Argosy HALO desk. A Rupert Neve Designs R10 chassis, (2) Heritage Audio HA73jr mic-pres (Neve 1073 clones), (2) Rupert Neve Designs 542 Tape Emulators, dbx 520 de-esser, Rupert Neve Designs 551 EQ, (2) Rupert Neve Designs 543 Compressor/Limiters, dbx 560A compressor and Radial EXTC.

The goal with this gear was to have quality analog components for mono and stereo channel strips, recording better audio from the source. Also, keeping the entire signal chain, including effects, analog before the DAW input means the live monitor/headphone mix will be "hands on" and not buried in DAW menus, which means faster setup and easier workflow when recording.

When needed, audio inside the DAW can be routed through the analog chain for analog warmth and color, either by individual track or an entire mix or buss.
